Europe switches on its first microgrid-connected data center

Europe has activated its first large data centre powered by a self‑contained microgrid to meet soaring demand from artificial intelligence computing, highlighting the strain that traditional electricity grids are facing.

The facility, built near Dublin by Pure Data Centres in partnership with power‑solutions firm AVK, runs on its own microgrid rather than waiting for a connection to the national grid, which has been delayed by constrained capacity and regulatory hurdles.

The microgrid‑based approach aims to ensure reliable, scalable power for energy‑intensive AI workloads and reduce dependency on stressed public grids. Powered initially by natural‑gas generators with the option to switch to low‑carbon fuels and supplemented with battery storage, the project reflects a broader trend where data infrastructure developers take responsibility for their own electricity supply. This shift underscores how energy‑demand pressures from the AI boom are reshaping power infrastructure planning in Europe and could signal a new model for future data centre deployment.
